Zenith Aerospace is seeking a talented Embedded Systems Engineer to join our team designing hardware and software for an exciting new aircraft design. This engineer will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of aero, mechanical, structural, electrical, and software engineers. You'll be taking ownership of various embedded systems development projects from design through prototyping to flight test and production. These include avionics and autopilot integration, subsystem controllers, data acquisition, and more. This is a hands-on position, deeply involved in the prototype development and eventual flight test. This position reports to the Director of Aircraft Engineering and is located on-site at our headquarters in Belmont, CA.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate within the engineering team to gather requirements and define architectures for aircraft subsystems
  • Design, fabricate, and test custom PCB hardware and firmware
  • Select and source components and work with vendors to customize designs, if necessary
  • Integrate the autopilot and develop customized control software
  • Develop the flight test ground station and telemetryIntegrate systems into the iron bird ground test setup
  • Create procedures and conduct test campaigns to qualify hardware and software for flight test and production
  • Participate in flight testing and data reduction to validate system performance
  • Maintain and improve embedded build infrastructure and automated test environments
  • Refine the system design for rate production, creating appropriate documentation, work instructions, and acceptance testing procedures
  • Collaborate closely with aircraft electricians to design, fabricate, test, and troubleshoot the systems
  • Mentor fellow developing engineers and act as a SME

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant experience hands-on experience in object-oriented design, C/C++
  • Demonstrated experience writing multithreaded code for time critical and/or safety critical applications
  • Proficient programming with C/C++ in a Linux environment
  • Experience with complex multi-threaded embedded systems
  • Experience with communication protocols such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422 RS485, CAN, I2C, SPI, JTAG
  • Proficiency in reading datasheets, schematic review, and hardware-bring up
  • Experience emulating complex safety-critical components
  • Understanding of structured software development processes (code reviews, version control, unit test development, on-hardware test & debugging)
  • Knowledge of electronics principles, including reading schematics and using logic analyzers, oscilloscope and other test equipment

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 7-8+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working on software for Flight Controls, Electric Vehicles (EV) powertrains, including motor control and battery management systems
  • Experience with VHDL and/or Verilog development
  • Familiarity with modeling tools like UML or SysML
  • Knowledge of Linux, Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and multi-threading
  • Experience designing, developing, and deploying safety-critical software for real time systems, ideally on large scale aerial platforms
  • Experience deploying flight controls, autonomy, sensor fusion, and navigation algorithms on resource-constrained embedded targets
  • Experience with graphical operator-facing system design tools such as VAPS XT
  • Familiarity with Simulink and autocode integration
  • Familiarity with FMEA, FHA, and other fault modes analysis processes
  • Familiarity with aviation software certification standards & processes (e.g. DO-178C, DO-254)

We are headquartered in Belmont, California, USA. We are predominantly an on-site work environment with regular expectation of working on-site with flexibility should the role allow. The base compensation is targeted between $130,000 - $200,000 annually, depending on experience level. Beyond base salary, we offer incentive stock options, comprehensive health insurance offerings, and four [4] weeks of PTO annually, among other benefits.
